There are many misunderstandings and misconceptions about Domestic Violence. It is common to believe that it must include physical or sexual abuse. In fact, domestic violence can include elder abuse, threatening violence, stalking, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, property damage, harassment, intimidation, impersonation, a disruption of peace, and even financial abuse or neglect.
Grandparents, relatives and others can be domestic abusers. It is not always just a husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend that commits violence acts. In fact, you do not even need to reside with a person to be a victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence may not be repetitive and can a “one time” incident or even isolated issue. Often times understanding you are a victim is the hardest realization as abuse can be inflicted over the span of many years.
Domestic Violence Restraining Orders
DVTRO, or Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order is a court order that limits the conduct of a person – for example, barring a person from being within a certain distance of another and/or from specific acts. DVTROs are commonly issued and filed with the court under emergency conditions by way of an “ex parte application”. If a temporary order (DVTRO) becomes permanent, it becomes a DVRO.
